Red Sun: A Blood Orange Margarita

For this Margarita recipe, the bar team of Estelle’s in New York used the classic Margarita template to create their own take that’s “bright and refreshing, with just enough complexity to carry you through the night,” says Jonathan Colon, Estelle’s beverage R&D manager. The light smoke of mezcal and the sweet-tartness of blood orange give the cocktail depth, while Aperol’s bittersweetness balances it all out.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz. blanco tequila
  • 3/4 oz. Aperol
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. mezcal
  • 1/2 oz. blood orange syrup (1:1 blood orange purée to sugar)
  • 2 dashes fire tincture
  • Tools:shaker, strainer, fine-mesh strainer
  • Glass:rocks
  • Garnish:tajín-salt rim and blood orange slice

Preparation

Rim a glass with tajín and salt and set aside. Add all of the ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake to chill. Double strain into the prepared glass over a large ice cube. Garnish.
