Coastal Connections from Death & Co Denver

Originally, Scott Ruggerio of Death & Co Denver used Japanese whisky in his whiskey sour, which was inspired by the Penicillin cocktail. But then he found that rye whiskey added an extra layer of spice to those created by the ginger and bitters. “That spiciness is rounded out by the floral honey and raisiny sherry, as well as the sweet and bitter oranges in Montenegro,” he says.


  • 1 oz. high-proof rye whiskey (Death & Co uses Wild Turkey 101)
  • 1/2 oz. Amaro Montenegro
  • 1/2 oz. oloroso sherry (Death & Co uses La Cigarrera)
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. penicillin syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Tools:shaker, strainer, fine-mesh strainer
  • Glass:coupe


Add all of the ingredients to a shaker along with ice, shake, then double strain into the glass.

Penicillin SyrupMix together one part honey syrup (2:1 honey and hot water) and one part ginger syrup (2:1 white sugar and fresh ginger juice).
