Same Same but Virgin: A Spirit-Free Drink

When Sama Street head bartender David Muhs traveled through Vietnam and tasted the grilled fish dish Chả cá Lã Vọng, its flavors inspired him to create the Same Same but Different cocktail. Sama Street’s menu describes the tequila drink as a “cocktail soup for the soul.” “It’s refreshing, creamy, and herbaceous,” says Muhs. “The fish sauce adds a little umami that brings it all together.” Those flavors also translated beautifully into this spirit-free take on the recipe.

For the ginger turmeric tea, Muhs uses one by Harney & Sons but says any ginger turmeric tea will work as long as there is a strong turmeric flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. cooled ginger turmeric tea (Sama Street uses Harney & Sons)
  • 1 oz. Coco Lopez
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 10 drops fish sauce
  • Tools:shaker, strainer
  • Glass:decorative mug or collins
  • Garnish:mint leaves, 2 3-inch-long dill springs

Preparation

Add all of the ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake well, then strain into a glass filled with crushed ice and garnish.
