Drink of the Week: ANXO Ornamental Dry Cider

ANXO OrnamentalCiders don’t seem to make it into my regular beverage rotation as much as they rightfully should, as I’m more inclined to reach for a beer when I want something light and/or bubbly. But the crisp complexity of the dry ciders from ANXO has me repeatedly grabbing a can (or two) from the fridge to enjoy on a sunny riverbank or around the campfire on a recent backpacking trip. The D.C.-based cider maker hews more closely to traditional European styles, sourcing apples from local orchards and fermenting with native yeast in wooden casks. The result is a dry, crisp cider that highlights the natural, tart complexity of the fruit. Their current seasonal, Ornamental, is made solely with crabapples more commonly planted as a pollinator and for aesthetic appeal. Blending three crabapple varieties—Hewe’s, Manchurian and Burford’s Red-Fleshed—and fermenting with the naturally occurring yeast from the skins, the ANXO Ornamental is vibrantly tart and juicy with a hint of soft florals and peppery spice. The Ornamental will be available for several more weeks, but all of ANXO’s expressions are worth exploring. You might just find your next go-to beverage. $14.99/4-pack or $44.99/12-pack, anxocider.com.
