Jefferson’s Crimson: A Pomegranate Cocktail

Jefferson's Crimson

A vibrant sipper that pairs bourbon and pomegranate.

“I once read a story about Thomas Jefferson being the first to bring pomegranate to the United States,” says Todd Thrasher, who created this recipe, which was first featured in the November/December 2007 issue of Imbibe. At the time, Thrasher, now a rum distiller, was with the now-closed Restaurant Eve is in Virginia, which he noted was home to Jefferson. “And Virginia is home to Southern Comfort,” he added.

Ingredients

  • 3 oz. pomegranate juice
  • 1 oz. bourbon
  • 1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
  • 1/2 oz. pomegranate syrup (1 qt. pomegranate juice and 1/2 cup sugar, reduced by half over medium heat)
  • Tools:salad plate, shaker, strainer
  • Glass:cocktail
  • Garnish:pomegranate sugar rim

Preparation

Rim a glass with pomegranate and raw sugar: sprinkle sugar on a salad plate, wet the rim of the glass with 1/4 oz. of pomegranate syrup and dip in sugar to coat rim. In a shaker, combine the rest of the ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into the glass.
