Drink of the Week: AVEC Mixers

My culinary ambitions have ebbed and flowed throughout this period of quarantine, sometimes sending me into the kitchen to fervently prepare an entire batch of red velvet cupcakes or shake up a frothy Amaretto Sour. But more often than not, I’ll simply reach for whatever happens to be cold and ready to drink. Fortunately, the new AVEC mixers earn major bonus points for being as delicious as they are easy.

Co-founded by Columbia Business School classmates Dee Charlemagne and Alex Doman and made in Brooklyn, the fizzy AVEC mixers come in five familiar-with-a-twist flavors, like Yuzu & Lime, Grapefruit & Pomelo and Jalapeño & Blood Orange. Made with fresh fruit juices, spices, extracts and sweeteners like agave, the mixers land on the drier side of the spectrum and are complex enough to sip solo for an alcohol-free option. With autumn’s chill in the air, I’ve been mixing with the AVEC Ginger, which has a spiciness complemented by pineapple and lime juices, agave, molasses and allspice. Dosed with a shot of rye whiskey, it makes for a nicely spicy and not-too-sweet Whiskey Ginger. $36/12-pack, avecdrinks.com
