Port City Rum Old Fashioned

Miss River New Orleans Port City Old Fashioned

A potent and funky ode to New Orleans.

Brian Kozak, lead bartender of Miss River in the Four Seasons New Orleans, pays tribute to the port city with his take on the rum Old Fashioned. He shifts the classic from bourbon to a funky Jamaican pot-still rum, balances it out with orange bitters, and adds Fernet for “the mysterious twist on the finish.”

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. pot-stilled Jamaican rum (Miss River uses Smith & Cross)
  • 1/4 oz. Fernet Branca
  • 1/4 oz. cane syrup
  • 3 dashes orange bitters
  • Tools:mixing glass, barspoon, strainer
  • Glass:Old Fashioned
  • Garnish:charred orange wheel

Preparation

Add the cane syrup, Fernet, and rum to a mixing glass with ice and stir. Strain over a large ice cube in a glass and add the orange bitters. Garnish.

Charring the FruitCut a slice of orange. Place it under a broiler or on a grill until charred, or use a culinary torch.
