Latitude 29’s Mr. Curtis Recipe

The Mr. Curtis cocktail at Latitude 29 in New Orleans features overproof rum.Named for Latitude 29 regular (and Imbibe contributing editor) Wayne Curtis, this cocktail from the bar’s opening menu was recently reformulated using overproof rum. “It gives the drink the ‘oomph’ I always thought it needed,” says bar owner Jeff “Beachbum” Berry.

1¼ oz. Demerara rum (Berry uses El Dorado 8-year-old)
1 oz. chai syrup
1 oz. fresh lime juice
¾ oz. Plantation O.F.T.D. Overproof rum
Tools: shaker, strainer
Glass: cocktail
Garnish: lime wedge pierced with pirate flag

Shake all ingredients with ice, then strain into chilled glass and garnish.

Chai Syrup: In a saucepan, combine 32 oz. (1 carton) of liquid chai concentrate (Berry uses Oregon Chai Original) with 20 oz. of gold turbinado or demerara sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring regularly, then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat, let cool, and bottle. Keep refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.
