The Brave: A Split-Base Agave Spirits Cocktail

You won’t need ice to stir up this classic tequila-mezcal sipper by Bobby Heugel.

A room-temperature cocktail with a split base of agave spirits, The Brave has been on Anvil’s menu with few interruptions since its debut in 2009.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. mezcal
  • 1 oz. blanco tequila
  • 1/2 oz. Averna
  • 1/4 oz. curaçao or Grand Marnier
  • Glass:wine
  • Garnish:Angostura bitters, flamed orange peel

Preparation

Combine the ingredients in a wine glass and gently swirl to combine. Using an atomizer, spray 3 bursts of Angostura bitters on the drink’s surface. (Alternatively, add 3 drops of Angostura to the drink.) Take a coin-size slice of orange peel and—while carefully holding a lit match slightly above and to the side of the drink’s surface—spray its oils through the flame and atop the drink.
