Drink of the Week: New London Light

Despite being a faithful gin drinker, whenever I’m in the mood for a no- or low-alcohol option, I tend to reach for a bottle of tonic water, occasionally dressed up with a few dashes of celery bitters. It’s a simple way to scratch the itch for something refreshing, slightly bitter, and spirit-free. So when New London Light, a new no-alcohol offering from the makers of Salcombe gin, landed on my desk, my hopes were high, especially after becoming a fan of the distillery’s flagship gin.

New London Light is made from a mix of juniper, ginger, and habanero, distilled together in a copper still. Fifteen additional botanical extracts are blended in, including orange, sage, lemongrass, and cardamom. It’s enjoyable sipped on its own, neat or over ice, but when mixed with a quality tonic, it opens up beautifully. Searingly crisp and bright, the flavor is incredibly layered and complex with notes of savory sage and dried orange peel at the forefront. The habanero subtly accentuates the structure, while the ginger dances around the edges with a hint of spice. Whether you’re making it a Dry January or simply looking for a great spirit-free option for any-day drinking, this bottling is sure to please. $34.99, salcombegin.com
