Drink of the Week: ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto

In the fast-growing aperitivo category, ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto stands out for its distinctive flavour profile thanks to a unique ingredient: bergamot. A reinvention of the historic Italian Rosolio, ITALICUS was created by Italian spirits expert, Giuseppe Gallo, to revive the forgotten Rosolio category. Rosolio (which translates in English to “morning dew”) is a style of liqueur that’s historically is made from a neutral base spirit and one primary fruit, herb, or spice.

ITALICUS is made using the finest Italian ingredients with key notes of bergamot, a fragrant citrus orange that grows throughout the Mediterranean. The Bergamot citrus fruit is similar in size to an orange but with a yellow-green peel, and it is rich in essential oils. ITALICUS exclusively uses bergamot from a UNESCO-protected area in Calabria, which runs along the coast of southern Italy.

Since its launch in 2016, ITALICUS has become one of the world’s top-awarded aperitivo, including Best New Spirit 2017 at the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards, and Top Trending Liquor Brand by Drinks International from 2019 to 2023. The liqueur’s profile is floral and citrusy with a subtle bitterness and spice, making it an excellent match for a wide array of spirits and cocktail styles. It’s the perfect match in a summery spritz with it’s floral and fragrant citrus notes but can also work well in creative variations on classics, like the Margarita (see the recipe below).

This is an aperitivo liqueur you’ll want to have in your home bar as summer approaches, but it will serve you well year-round. Visit the ITALICUS website to find out where to find a bottle near you (or head directly to Drizly), and click here to read more about the liqueur.
