Drink of the Week: Bols Genever

If you love gin, it’s time to get to know its Dutch predecessor, genever, specifically the expressions made by Bols. Bols Original Genever uses the 1820 Bols Genever formula and blends a malt base with 22 botanicals, including juniper berries, hops, and coriander, resulting in a rich, smooth spirit that’s great for mixing and sipping.

Even though genever has been produced since the Middle Ages, it hasn’t enjoyed the ubiquity of modern gin, but that’s changed in recent years. The spirit is versatile enough to work in a myriad of cocktails, but one of our favorite ways to mix with it is in the Red Light Negroni, which simply swaps out gin for genever in the classic equal-parts formula.
