El Muerto Andante: An Agave Zombie Riff

A Zombie variation for those who love agave spirits.

For their Tiki Tuesdays at Compass Rose in Los Angeles, Danny Rubenstein and Joey Muñoz created an agave-powered take on the Zombie. They advise that brands don’t matter, but they do suggest using an espadin mezcal as the focal point and then a different mezcal varietal for the second spirit. If a Mexican moonshine is difficult to find, Muñoz recommends swapping in a blanco or reposado tequila.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 oz. espadin mezcal (Compass Rose uses Amaras Verde)
  • 3/4 oz. papalote mezcal
  • 3/4 oz. moonshine (Compass Rose uses Prieto y Prieta Oaxacan)
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. falernum
  • 1/2 oz. grenadine
  • 1/4 oz. cinnamon syrup
  • 3 dashes of Peychaud's bitters
  • Tools:shaker
  • Glass:Collins
  • Garnish:mint bouquet

Preparation

Add the ingredients, except the bitters, to a shaker with crushed ice and whip shake. Pour into a glass and fill with crushed ice, then top with a few dashes of Peychaud’s bitters and garnish.
