Simple Syrup

simple syrup

An essential ingredient in a home bar.

Mint Juleps, Mojitos, Mai Tais and countless other drinks call for the sweet solution. Stored in the refrigerator, it’s also a quick, convenient sweetener for iced teas and coffees. It’s a great base for flavored syrups, too. Just add rosemary or ginger, or any seasonal flavors you score at the farmer’s market.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Tools:saucepan, funnel, glass bottle/jar

Preparation

Simmer equal parts of granulated sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat for 1–2 minutes. Adjust sugar to taste, adding more if you want a thicker, sweeter syrup. Stir gently and simmer for another 1–2 minutes, or until the syrup is translucent. Remove from heat and let cool. Funnel the syrup into a glass bottle or jar, cover and shake well. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. For a longer-lasting syrup, add a splash of vodka or another strong spirit.
