Widow’s Kiss Cocktail

A beguiling take on a classic recipe.

As first presented in George Kappeler’s Modern American Drinks in 1895, the Widow’s Kiss is an engaging blend of two French herbal liqueurs and apple brandy. This adaptation by bartender Jim Meehan adjusts the classic proportions for modern tastes. “Doubling the apple brandy and paring the liqueur quantities back pulls this out of the after-dinner drinks family and pushes it towards Old Fashioned territory,” Meehan says.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. apple brandy (Meehan uses Laird’s)
  • 1⁄4 oz. yellow Chartreuse
  • 1⁄4 oz. Bénédictine
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Tools:barspoon, strainer
  • Glass:cocktail
  • Garnish:cherry

Preparation

Stir all of the ingredients with ice, strain into a chilled glass, then garnish.
