White Elephant, A Fruitcake-Inspired Cocktail

A bundle of dark and complex flavors beckon winter sipping.

Bartender Isaac Shumway reached for dark, rich flavors that add winter warmth to his spin on fruitcake. “Scotch reminds me of honey, spice, and fruit, and Cognac is always pears and flowers to me,” he says. Sweet vermouth adds a touch of vanilla, and the duo of nutty liqueurs completes the picture.


  • 3⁄4 oz. blended scotch whisky
  • 3⁄4 oz. Cognac
  • 3⁄4 oz. Carpano Antica sweet vermouth
  • 1 tsp. amaretto (Shumway uses Luxardo)
  • 1⁄2 tsp. nocino
  • Tools:mixing glass, barspoon, strainer
  • Glass:cocktail
  • Garnish:orange twist, cherry


Combine all of the ingredients in a mixing glass with ice, then stir to chill. Strain into a chilled glass and garnish.
