Sleepwalker: A Coffee Cocktail

Sleepwalker

A cocktail that works equally well cold or hot.

Paul Ramirez, partner and head bartender at Brooklyn bar We Got Company, started with a garnish and worked his way backward for this Sleepwalker coffee cocktail. “I set out to make a bourbon drink so I could utilize my mother’s family bourbon ball recipe as a garnish,” Ramirez says. “In the end, I decided to pivot to my father’s Mexican heritage and use tequila. We revamped the recipe and the tequila chocolate ball was born.” The drink was also originally conceived as a hot beverage, but it can be prepared hot or cold depending on personal preference.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. coffee syrup
  • 1 1/2 oz. blanco tequila
  • 1/4 oz. Fernet-Branca
  • 1 dash Mexican chocolate bitters
  • Tools:shaker, strainer
  • Glass:footed beer
  • Garnish:orange twist

Preparation

Shake all of the ingredients with ice, strain into a glass filled with fresh ice, then garnish.

To prepare the drink hot, add the ingredients to a shaker and shake without ice, then pour into a warmed glass and top with 2 oz. of boiling water. Garnish.
Coffee SyrupCombine 140 grams of demerara sugar with 330 grams of coffee concentrate. Stir until dissolved and refrigerate for use within 7–10 days.
