Oaxacan on Broken Glass mezcal and chile cocktail

The spicy backbone of this cocktail invites another sip.

The beauty of this spicy mezcal cocktail from Mike Choi, beverage director of Chicago’s Clever Coyote, is that the heat from the chile liqueur lingers just long enough to entice another sip. “Everyone always comments on the heat saying it’s why they love the drink so much,” Choi says.


  • 2 oz. mezcal (Clever Coyote uses Banhez)
  • 1/2 oz. Ancho Reyes chile liqueur
  • 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 dashes habanero bitters (Clever Coyote uses Scrappy's)
  • Tools:shaker
  • Glass:rocks
  • Garnish:torched rosemary sprig


Add all of the ingredients to an ice-filled shaker, give it a quick shake, then pour the contents into the glass. Garnish.
