Matriarch Martini: An Espresso Martini Twist

Matriarch Martini bourbon espresso martini riff

A dessert-inspired take on a modern classic.

In their new book, A Quick Drink: The Speed Rack Guide to Winning Cocktails for Any Mood, Lynnette Marrero and Ivy Mix (with Megan Krigbaum) spotlight the recipes of competitors and winners from their global bartending and fundraising competition, including Speed Rack USA winner Haley Traub. When Traub competed in 2018, she was prompted to create an Espresso Martini variation inspired by a loved one. She immediately thought of her grandmother, a three-time breast cancer survivor, and her mom’s Black Forest trifle dessert. For her twist on the modern classic, she replaces vodka with bourbon, adds tart cherry juice, and complements the whiskey and espresso with vanilla syrup and chocolate shavings.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz. bourbon
  • 3/4 oz. tart cherry juice
  • 3/4 oz. espresso
  • 1/2 oz. vanilla demerara syrup
  • Tools:shaker, strainer
  • Glass:cocktail
  • Garnish:chocolate shavings

Preparation

Add all of the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake until cold, then strain into a chilled glass. Garnish.

Vanilla Demerara SyrupCombine 1 cup of demerara sugar with a 1/4 tsp. of vanilla extract in a small saucepan with 1 cup of water over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved, then remove from the heat. Let cool to room temperature before pouring into an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
