Grandpa’s Sun Tea Cocktail

Memorial Day Weekend cocktail

A batchable amaro-rich cocktail for summer.

It may look like the jars of tea brewing on sunny window sills all summer, but this full-flavored, amaro-based cocktail (which can be easily batched for packing along to a picnic in a Thermos or cooler) has a character all its own. “This cocktail is crisp and refreshing, but it definitely has a story to tell,” says Josh Gandee. “It’s easily batched for the days when the sun is gonna stay out as long as you want it to.”

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. Cynar
  • 3⁄4 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1⁄2 oz. Averna
  • 1⁄2 oz. mezcal (Watershed uses an espadín from Del Maguey)
  • 1⁄2 oz. rich simple syrup (1.5:1)
  • Tools:shaker, strainer
  • Glass:jar or highball
  • Garnish:lemon and lime wheels

Preparation

Shake all of the ingredients with ice, strain into a glass filled with fresh ice, then garnish. (If batching in advance, add 1 oz. of water per serving and fully chill the mixture; to serve, simply pour into ice- filled glasses and garnish.)
