A bittersweet take on the classic.

A Manhattan by way of Halifax, this tweak of Audrey Saunders’ modern classic Little Italy cocktail swaps Canadian rye for the Little Italy’s American rye whiskey, against the richness of Italian vermouth and bittersweet Cynar.


  • 1 1⁄2 oz. Canadian rye whisky (McDonald uses Lot 40)
  • 1 oz. sweet vermouth (McDonald uses Cocchi Vermouth di Torino)
  • 1⁄2 oz. Cynar
  • Tools:barspoon, strainer
  • Glass:cocktail
  • Garnish:amarena cherry


Stir all of the ingredients with ice, strain into a chilled glass, then garnish.
