Birds of Paradise Strong Water cocktail

Summer vacation captured in a glass.

Although Anaheim tropical bar Strong Water, which is a freeway exit away from Disneyland, features a rum-heavy menu, bartender Lynette Le-Lim wanted to create a vodka drink that tasted like biting into fresh fruit on a hot day. Her Birds of Paradise cocktail not only does that, but she says it’s “approachable to anyone who wants to enjoy escapism with a libation.” 

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. fresh pineapple juice
  • 1/4 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. rich simple syrup (2:1)
  • 1 fresh whole strawberry
  • 3 hot house cucumber slices
  • 1 dash peach bitters (Le-Lim uses Fee Brothers)
  • Tools:muddler, shaker, fine strainer, strainer
  • Glass:hurricane
  • Garnish:chilled strawberry slices, umbrella

Preparation

Muddle strawberry, cucumber, and syrup together in the shaker. Add rest of ingredients and ice to the shaker. Shake and double strain over pebble ice in a glass. Garnish.
