A Quartet of Espresso Martinis

At Peasant in New York City, the Espresso Martini is toned down by removing the vodka, but given an extra bump of flavor via one of a choice of four added amari. Michael Laudenslager, Peasant’s assistant general manager, says the amaro choices are inspired by coffee’s agricultural connections and its regional terroir. “Amaro mimics the same idea, except what the land has to offer the beverage,” he says. “Combining the two had no chance but to work; it’s like our morning blend, but in this case, Martini blends.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. espresso
  • 1 oz. coffee liqueur (Peasant uses Kahlua)
  • 1 oz. amaro (see choices below)
  • Tools:shaker, strainer
  • Glass:Martini
  • Garnish:see choices below

Preparation

Shake all of the ingredients with ice until chilled, then strain into a chilled glass, and garnish.

Options

Bitter Orange and VanillaUse Amaro Nonino for the amaro, and garnish with an orange twist.

Alpine and ChamomileUse Braulio for the amaro, and garnish with espresso beans.

Mint and ChocolateUse Branca Menta for the amaro, and garnish with a mint leaf.

Herbs and CaramelUse Cynar for the amaro, and garnish with espresso beans.
