Drink of the Week: Rare Tea Cellars Shizouka Matcha

Intelligentsia’s matcha latte is a regular comfort for digital editor Emma Janzen.

While we’re all drinking at home for the foreseeable future, we thought it would be fitting to turn inward for our usual Drink of the Week column and share the drinks our staff is reaching for while inside. This week’s entry  comes from digital editor, Emma Janzen. We’d also love to hear from you, so tell us what you’re drinking right now by using the #imbibegram #drinkoftheweek hashtags on twitter and instagram!

Before Chicago collectively hunkered down at home, one of my favorite weekly rituals was walking to my local Intelligentsia and ordering a matcha latte. But with the café currently closed, I now find solace in the treasures of my tea cabinet at home. This week the Shizouka Matcha from Rare Tea Cellars has been satisfying my tea cravings. A blend of first- and second-harvest teas from Nishio, Japan, it’s a lovely expression of the earthy green tea that shines with its simplicity—it offers a cashmere of comfort on chilly mornings and a dose of optimism in the afternoons. Sometimes I go the extra step to turn it into a latte, and there’s always a moment of serenity as I float the whisk through the powder. It’s exactly what I need to fortify my mind, body and soul during these strange and stressful times.
