Drink of the Week: Leah Jørgensen Cellars Blanc de Cabernet Franc

In our September/October 2022 issue, we explore why Cabernet Franc just might be the perfect autumn wine. Though long used as a blending grape in its native France, Cabernet Franc makes for a delicious single-varietal wine, with a light-to-medium body and flavors ranging from earthy and vegetal to juicy and spicy. Winemaker Leah Jørgensen, based in Newberg, Oregon, works solely with Cab Francs, with fruit sourced from certified LIVE vineyards in southern Oregon’s Rogue and Applegate Valleys. But her Blanc de Cabernet Franc might just make you do a double take. Yes, it’s a white Cabernet Franc.

Jørgensen is no stranger to getting experimental in her cellar, even singing opera to her aging barrels. To craft her Blanc de Cabernet Franc, Jørgensen pressed the grapes and immediately removed the juice from the skins before barrel fermenting. The wine was then stirred on the lees in stainless steel to heighten the acidity and fruit flavors. The result is a vibrant white wine flush with flavors of ripe orchard fruit, golden raspberry, Meyer lemon, and white tea. With a medium body and just a hint of spice, this is a white wine perfect for the autumn dinner table. $40, leahjorgensencellars.com
