Drink of the Week: Et Fille STEM & root Pinot Noir

When we talk about “mindful drinking” these days, typically we are referring to being thoughtful about our alcohol consumption. But it can also extend to choosing beverages from producers who are thoughtful about their business practices and community impact. So it was with pleasure and curiosity that I uncorked the STEM & root Pinot Noir from Oregon winery Et Fille.

Founded by father-and-daughter Howard and Jessica Mozeico, who had long made wine together as a hobby around their careers in software engineering and biotechnology, respectively, Et Fille officially launched in 2003. Now a B-Corp-certified winery with Jessica as owner, Et Fille places a heavy emphasis on cultivating strong communities. Jessica leads the Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion Task Force for the Willamette Valley Wineries Association. And as a nod to her and her father’s science and technology backgrounds, the STEM & root wine was crafted to benefit STEM programming. Five percent of the profits from each bottle go to the Girls Inc. PNW Eureka! program.

But the quality of the wine itself is not an afterthought. The STEM & root Pinot Noir is a prime example of why the Willamette Valley is world-renowned for the varietal. Garnet-hued with a luscious aroma of ripe berries, the wine is bright and fresh. Its juicy fruit flavors balance some of the earthier, herbal undertones and delicate tannins. This would pair easily with anything on the dinner table the next time you’re in the mood for something both delicious and mindful. $24, etfillewines.com
