Drink of the Week: Mommenpop Meyer Lemonpop

I’m a firm believer that fresh lemon is a welcome addition to almost everything, whether squeezed over a salad or spritzed into a drink. Thus, the new Mommenpop Meyer Lemonpop was not a hard sell for me. Sipped as a simple spritz, the citrus-infused aperitif wine might as well be liquid sunshine. It will be the new centerpiece of my springtime bar.

Crafted in California by winemaker Samantha Sheehan, who founded both POE and Ultraviolet Wines, Mommenpop makes a core collection of aperitifs featuring Seville orange, ruby grapefruit, and blood orange. But for springtime, the citrus-obsessed crew created the limited-edition Meyer Lemonpop, made from 800 pounds’ worth of organic Meyer lemons. A subtle hint of licorice from fresh tarragon complements the citrus macerated into a base of Chardonnay wine and brandy. The Meyer lemons’ naturally sweeter, floral notes come through in both aroma and taste, making the Lemonpop live up to its name.

Lightly sweet and clocking in at 20 percent ABV, the Meyer Lemonpop is easy to sip over ice or extra refreshing mixed with equal parts bubbles. I plan to experiment with a few lower ABV cocktails as well, perfect for sipping in the sunshine. $38, mommenpop.com
