3 Essential Bourbon Bottles

New Orleans bartender Liam Deegan (Longway Tavern, Barrel Proof, Sylvain) can’t pinpoint the exact moment he fell in love with bourbon, but he’s always been drawn to the spirit’s cultural heritage. “It’s always been made the same way, and there are great folks that dedicate their lives and legacies to ensuring it stays that way,” he says. “That creates a sense of home and comfort that you can’t help but love.” Here, Deegan shares three of his favorite bottles of bourbon.

Henry McKenna Bonded 10 Year Single Barrel “This has been a really popular one at Barrel Proof, mostly when bartenders are asked to pick something out. Everyone knows the Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark, Woodford Reserve, etc. But McKenna from Heaven Hill offers a 10 year old single barrel rye recipe bourbon at a super great value. It’s got subtle spice, but also nice chocolate and vanilla flavors.”

Four Roses Small Batch “Simply put, Four Roses makes consistently stellar juice. The small batch is one of their three core products, and it never disappoints. I could say a lot about why it’s good and such a crowd favorite (higher proof, affordable, widely available), but this is one whiskey that’s better if you just shut up, drink and enjoy.”

Old Weller Antique “Next to Four Roses Single Barrel, this is my go-to when ordering a glass. It’s a little harder to find in certain parts of the country these days due its connection to the incredibly popular Van Winkle collection. It has a high percentage of wheat in the mash bill, which typically creates a softer mouthfeel and pleasantly sweet finish. The higher proof (107) makes it perfect to sip on the rocks as dilution will only make it more pleasant.”
