Capturing the flavor and aroma from fresh hops can be a tricky business. To incorporate the essence at its peak, Odell Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado, built a hammer grinder to grind up fresh hop flowers on the spot before adding them to their newest brew, Rupture. “It’s a wildly inefficient process,” said Bill Beymer, Odell’s brewing manager. “But once we tried the test batches, we knew it was worth the effort.” Dubbed a “fresh grind ale,” Rupture is the newest addition to Odell’s year-round lineup. Light gold in color and bursting with floral hop aromas, the taste is bright and fresh with flavors of citrus and jasmine and a surprisingly light bitterness—refreshing enough for these lingering, Indian summer days.
