The Sweeney Toddy

A simple winter spice syrup brings extra warmth to this toddy recipe. Bar Shiru co-owner and creative director Daniel Gahr says the syrup also works splendidly in place of simple in a seasonal Old Fashioned.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. winter spice syrup
  • 4 oz. hot water
  • Tools:barspoon
  • Glass:glass mug
  • Garnish:lemon peel with cloves

Preparation

In a glass mug, combine all of the ingredients. Give it a quick stir, then garnish.

Winter Spice Syrup:
2 cups golden brown sugar
2 cups filtered water
1 navel orange, sliced in half
4 cinnamon sticks
1/2 cup fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
2 Tbsp. whole cloves

Heat the brown sugar and water until the sugar is fully dissolved. Pierce the surface of the orange halves with the cloves and add to the syrup. Add sliced ginger and cinnamon sticks and simmer on low for 1 hour, minimum. Strain and cool to room temperature. If sealed in a jar, syrup should last in refrigerator for 10-14 days.
