Easy-drinking though it maybe, punch is not often a low-proof concoction. To dial down the booze but keep the complexity, Ticonderoga Club partners Paul Calvert and Greg Best turned to sweet vermouth augmented with one of their favorite bottles—dry French cider. “We wanted to make a low-ABV punch—a thing usually unheard of—and use some delicious dry cider, a thing we love to drink all year round,” says Calvert. They recommend a cider from Normandie or Brittany, like Domaine de Kerveguen Brut. “When we originally created this drink, we used a Normandie cider,” adds Best. “The name Richard, roughly meaning ‘brave ruler,’ was introduced to the English by a conquering Norman Duke around the 11th century. So the idea of a low-proof celebratory drink inspired by historic grandeur felt oddly comic, hence, ‘aww, Poor Richard...’."
