Old Square

A rustic take on the Vieux Carré.

For a bolder and more flavorful take on the Vieux Carré cocktail, James Beard award-winning mixologist Danny Childs swaps out cognac for a more rustic armagnac and adds a splash of rancio for “nutty, oxidative depth.”

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. Rittenhouse Rye
  • 1 oz. Armagnac
  • 1/2 oz. Rancio (or substitute with oloroso sherry)
  • 1/2 oz. Dolin Rouge
  • 1/4 oz. bénédictine
  • 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Tools:mixing glass, barspoon
  • Glass:rocks
  • Garnish:expressed lemon and orange peels

Preparation

Add all of the ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well chilled. Strain into the glass over a large cube. Express lemon and orange peels across the glass and use as a garnish.
