Obituary Martini

obituary martini

An absinthe-laced classic from New Orleans.

In her book The Martini, author Alice Lascelles chronicles the classic cocktail’s journey from the 1880s to today through 60 iterations. Naturally, the Obituary Martini, an absinthe-laced New Orleans creation, gets a shoutout. The garnish is key, though. “A skewer of salty black olives is the perfect antidote to the absinthe’s piercing sweetness,” writes Lascelles.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 oz. gin
  • 3/4 oz. dry vermouth
  • 8 drops absinthe
  • Tools:mixing glass, barspoon, strainer
  • Glass:cocktail
  • Garnish:black olives

Preparation

Add all of the ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir to chill and strain into the chilled glass. Garnish.
