Italian 47 Spritz

An Italian-inspired take on a brunchtime favorite.

“I wanted to create an Italian-inspired French 75 for our opening menu—something low ABV and refreshing without being boring,” says Marie Artale, owner of Patron Saint, which opened last summer in Cleveland’s trendy Ohio City neighborhood. “I think herbal or vegetal elements in cocktails, like the basil syrup here, add balance without overcomplicating a drink. And it’s crucial to start with a limoncello and Prosecco that you would enjoy drinking on their own. The beauty of a spritz is its simplicity, but you have to start with good ingredients.”

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. limoncello
  • 1/2 oz. basil syrup
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. dry Prosecco
  • 1 1/2 oz. club soda
  • Tools:barspoon
  • Glass:wine
  • Garnish:half lemon wheel

Preparation

Combine the limoncello, basil syrup, and lemon juice in a glass and stir to combine. Top with Prosecco and club soda, then fill the glass with ice and garnish.
Basil SyrupAdd 500 grams of hot water to 500 grams of sugar and stir until sugar dissolves. Add 100 grams of fresh basil to the hot syrup. Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then place in the fridge for 24 hours. Strain and bottle
for use within 2 weeks.
