Herb Alpert Cocktail

Agave spirits shine in this spicy and herbal mix.

From New York bartender Phil Ward, this cocktail (originally on the menu at the now-closed Mayahuel) features a split base of mezcal and jalapeño-infused blanco tequila matched with peppery oregano and a pop of citrus.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. mezcal
  • 1 oz. jalapeño-infused blanco tequila
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1⁄2 oz. rich simple syrup (2:1)
  • 8 leaves fresh oregano
  • Tools:shaker, strainer, fine strainer
  • Glass:coupe
  • Garnish:oregano leaf

Preparation

Shake all of the ingredients with ice to chill, then double-strain into a chilled coupe.

Jalapeno-infused blanco tequila: Use a paring knife to remove the seeds and membranes from 4 fresh jalapeño peppers. Add the seeds and membranes to a 750-ml. bottle of blanco tequila (reserve the peppers for another use); strain after 20 minutes and use within 2 weeks.
