Frozen Ginger Julep

This is the one instance when it’s okay to use the words julep and blender in the same sentence. Blasphemy never tasted so good.

4 oz. bourbon
3 oz. fresh lemon juice
8 cups ice cubes
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
1 cup spiced ginger syrup (see below)
Tools: blender
Glass: julep
Garnish: mint sprig

Combine all other ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into julep glasses and garnish. Serves 4

Spiced ginger syrup: In a small pot, simmer ½ cup water and ½ cup granulated sugar until combined. Add one 4-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped, 8 cloves and 1 star anise and continue to simmer for 25 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool, then strain, squeezing as much syrup from ginger as possible and chill syrup before using.
