Poor Richard: A Low-Proof Holiday Punch

Poor Richard holiday punch

Start or end the holiday party with this low-proof punch.

Easy-drinking though it maybe, punch is not often a low-proof concoction. To dial down the booze but keep the complexity, Ticonderoga Club partners Paul Calvert and Greg Best turned to sweet vermouth augmented with one of their favorite bottles—dry French cider. “We wanted to make a low-ABV punch—a thing usually unheard of—and use some delicious dry cider, a thing we love to drink all year round,” says Calvert. They recommend a cider from Normandie or Brittany, like Domaine de Kerveguen Brut. “When we originally created this drink, we used a Normandie cider,” adds Best. “The name Richard, roughly meaning ‘brave ruler,’ was introduced to the English by a conquering Norman Duke around the 11th century. So the idea of a low-proof celebratory drink inspired by historic grandeur felt oddly comic, hence, ‘aww, Poor Richard…’.”

Ingredients

  • 7 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 3 1/2 oz. cranberry cordial
  • 3 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 750 ml bottle of dry cider
  • Tools:barspoon
  • Glass:rocks
  • Garnish:grated nutmeg

Preparation

Add the first three ingredients to a pitcher or punch bowl and stir to combine. Top with the bottle of cider and gently stir to incorporate. Serve in a rocks glass with ice, and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.
Cranberry CordialIn a saucepan, bring 12 oz. of unsweetened, 100-percent cranberry juice to a low boil, then simmer until reduced by about two-thirds. Weigh the reduced liquid while still hot, then mix in an equal amount of white sugar by weight, and stir until dissolved. Bottle for use within 2 weeks, keeping refrigerated.
