Drink of the Week: Zumbador Tequila Blanco

As the tequila category has exploded in recent years and a dizzying number of brands have filled shelves, the process of finding a true artisanal tequila has become more confusing. But among this growing crowd are spirits that stand out for their heritage, process, and dedication to quality. Hailing from the highlands of Jesus Maria, Altos de Jalisco, Zumbador (which translates to hummingbird) is one such standout. Founded by fourth-generation agave grower Roberto López, Zumbador is a family-run distillery that produces blanco, reposado, and añejo tequila, and with spring and summer approaching, we are now reaching for their blanco.

The López family manages 1,000 acres of land with 1.5 million agaves planted in the Jaliscan highlands, where a perfect combination of altitude, soil, water, and climate allow for optimal growing conditions. Combine that with the family’s selective harvesting and traditional production techniques of masonry oven cooking, tahona crushing, wood and steel fermenters, copper and steel pot distillation, and zero additives. The result is an outstanding spirit that represents an incredible value. “Zumbador is a tequila made to reflect what my family has been drinking for generations,” says López. “Love, passion, work, and tradition in every drop.”

Zumbador’s blanco delivers a refined minerality and a subtle sweetness with citrus and of floral notes that unfold gracefully. And while it’s elegant enough to sip solo, it will shine in array of cocktails. Drink it in a traditional Batanga, a seasonal Margarita twist, or the Main Character recipe below. $24.99, zumbadortequila.com
