Philadelphia Fish House Punch

Following is Jerry’s Thomas’s recipe for the Fish House Punch from How to Mix Drinks, or the Bon Vivant’s Companion. “What’s interesting is the reference to “mixture,” says cocktail historian Ted Haigh. “In accounts of the proceedings of the Schuylkill Fishing Company, there were citations relating to Fish House Punch that mentioned ‘mixture,’ and I’m inclined to accept this recipe as the real deal (the Fish House members aren’t telling.).”

1/3 pint lemon juice
3/4 lb. white sugar
1 pint of spirits mixture: 1/4 pint peach brandy, 1/2 pint Cognac and 1/4 pint Jamaica rum
2 1/2 pints cold water

Stir all of the ingredients together in a large pot, and when ready, pour over ice.
