Mexican Velvet

The smoky spice of tequila and mezcal have a special affinity for pineapple; in this drink, the richness and smoke are further accented by the ginger and clove flavors of falernum.


1 3/4 oz. reposado tequila

1/3 oz. mezcal

1 oz. fresh lime juice

3/4 oz. pineapple syrup (use your favorite brand, or get a DIY recipe here)

1 tsp. falernum, for rinse

Ice cubes

Tools: shaker, strainer

Glass: cocktail

Garnish: thin slice of lime peel


Combine all ingredients except falernum in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake well until chilled, about 10 seconds; strain into chilled cocktail glass that’s been rinsed with falernum. Garnish.
