Turmeric Hot Toddy

A warming winter tonic.

It’s the drinker’s choice for a base spirit in this earthy, spiced Turmeric Hot Toddy. “Truly, anything works,” says Claire Sprouse of this recipe she created for her now-closed Brooklyn bar, Hunky Dory. What’s non-negotiable, she adds, is the brand of turmeric: Sprouse uses the single-origin Pragati turmeric powder from Diaspora Co., a woman- and BIPOC-owned direct-trade spice company.

Ingredients

  • 1 1⁄2 oz. amontillado sherry
  • 1 oz. spirit of choice (bourbon, gin, tequila—your choice)
  • 1 oz. turmeric syrup
  • 1⁄2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • Hot water
  • Tools:barspoon
  • Glass:mug
  • Garnish:dehydrated (or fresh) lemon wheel

Preparation

In a warmed mug, add the first 4 ingredients, top with 2 to 3 oz. of hot water, stir, then garnish.

Turmeric Syrup: Combine 1 cup of granulated sugar with 2 cups of hot water, then add 1 tablespoon of Diaspora Co. single-origin Pragati turmeric powder. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved and the turmeric is incorporated. Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to 10 days, and shake or stir before using as the turmeric will settle.
