Salty Stephen

Inspired by Stephen Cole’s Bitter Giuseppe from the Violet Hour, this riff from Ludlow Liquors amps up the sweet vermouth, tones down the Cynar and welcomes high-proof bourbon to the mix. “The saline solution tightens the bitter elements of the cocktail, taking the disparate ingredients and tying them together,” says Ludlow co-owner Wade McElroy of the final touch.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. sweet vermouth (Ludlow uses Carpano Antica or Cocchi di Torino)
  • ¾ oz. high-proof bourbon (Ludlow uses Wild Turkey 101)
  • ½ oz. Cynar
  • 4 drops saline solution
  • Tools:barspoon
  • Glass:rocks
  • Garnish:orange peel

Preparation

Stir all the ingredients together in a mixing glass with ice until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over a single large ice cube and garnish.

Saline solution: Mix 4 parts boiling water to 1 part sea salt until salt is dissolved. Let the mixture cool and transfer to dropper bottle.
