Drink of the Week: Day Wines 2015 Running Bare

Day WinesAs founder of the online directory and wine club Woman-Owned Wineries, Amy Bess Cook (our 2019 Wine Person of the Year) has the opportunity to meet winery owners and producers across America. Currently, she’s especially excited about winemaker Brianne Day and her label Day Wines, based in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Since 2012, Day has been able to increase her production from 125 cases to 5,000 cases last year, and one of Cook’s current faves is the Day Wines 2015 Running Bare, a French-inspired field blend of 50-percent Cabernet Franc with Malbec and Tannat. “I have so much love for Cabernet Franc right now. It can be so elegant and versatile,” says Cook. In the style of a true field blend, all the fruit was grown, picked and fermented together, and the years spent in the bottle have rounded the edges into a superbly drinkable wine. “Running Bare is a darkly compelling wine, like the girl sitting in the back of class scribbling poetry in her notebook,” says Cook. $33, daywines.com
