There was a time, around the middle of the last century, when almost every town in America had a soda fountain. You know the scene: the tiles, the stools, the long counters, and the fizzy, frothy drinks. A decade ago, these cultural icons looked like a dying breed, but a new wave of retro-styled fountains is keeping this beloved slice of Americana very much alive. The following list of current soda fountains includes shiny newcomers like Brooklyn Farmacy in New York, Franklin Fountain in Philadelphia and Blueplate Lunch Counter in Portland, Oregon, along with time-honored originals, like Orange, California’s 112-year-old Watson’s Drug and Moline, Illinois’ fourth-generation Lagomarcino’s.
