Nordic Skipper

Caraway-infused aquavit and concentrated cherry-spice syrup add a Scandinavian slant to this wintry sipper.

11/2 oz. aquavit
1 oz.  Kronan Swedish punsch
1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz. cherry glogg syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Tools: shaker, strainer, fine strainer
Glass: cocktail
Garnish: orange peel

Combine all ingredients and shake with ice for 15-20 seconds, until the outside of the shaker frosts. Double-strain and garnish.

Cherry Glogg Syrup
1/2 cup almonds, coarsely chopped
5 cardamom pods, crushed
8 whole cloves
5 allspice berries, crushed
1/4 cinnamon stick, broken into large pieces
8 oz. tart cherry juice concentrate
2 Tbsp. dried orange peel
1 Tbsp. dried lemon peel
1/4 cup (packed) raisins
1/2 cup fresh ginger, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 oz. almond extract

In a medium saucepan, toast first 5 ingredients over medium heat until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add all remaining ingredients, except almond extract, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let simmer uncovered for 20 minutes. Cover and let cool. Strain into a clean jar and stir in almond extract. Will keep refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.
