Portland bartender Jamal Hassan was featured as one of Imbibe’s 2013 People to Watch list in the Jan/Feb 2013 “Imbibe 75” issue. In this recipe from Hassan, a trio of bold ingredients meld into one harmonious sipper.

1 oz. rye whiskey
1 oz. fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz. Fernet Branca
1/2 oz. velvet falernum
1/2 oz. grenadine
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Tools: shaker, strainer
Glass: rocks

Combine all ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and garnish.
